So, it seems that I spend my time either painting, crafting or hunting down Vintage ‘Finds’ at Thrift Stores, Charity Shops, Garage Sales or Estate Sales. That’s what I’ve been doing in the last couple of weeks and once again, I found the ‘Pick’ of my life on Saturday {don’t cha just love that show, the pickers?}.
Picking
I was cruising the isles of the Goodwill store that’s about 15 minutes away from my house, and I saw this beautiful lady in a shopping cart {in the child’s seat ~ thank goodness}. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my shopping cart. I couldn’t let her just sail on by without saying hello, so I stopped the woman with the cart. “What a beautiful Ironstone Pitcher, do you collect Ironstone?”, “No, I just liked it – look, it’s got this stamp from England on the bottom,” she said. {picture me catching my breath – my heart beating fast}
We spent about five minutes, blocking the isle while admiring the lady. She does have a tiny ding right where the handle is at it’s tallest {I don’t think any less of her, though – few of us get through life without a few chinks in our armor}. Finally, I had to say goodbye to Katherine {that’s the name I gave the lady}, and I told the woman if she decided not to keep her, to please find me.
So, I wandered on feeling a little melancholy about Katherine. I couldn’t stop thinking about her charming melon ribbed shape and her scalloped rim & base.
Even as I found these two lovely apothecary jars {I also have a thing for apothecaries – I especially like this feminine little miss with the flowers on her hat – wouldn’t they be pretty on a shelf in a cottage style house?}, she was still in the back of my mind.
I was momentarily distracted by these twin Mad-Men like mid-century liquor decanters. Don’t you just love their diamond patterned square tops? I can see them front and center on a 1950′s portable bar, can’t you? Or maybe behind Don Draper’s desk on a little console, so that you only notice them when he’s closing a deal or entertaining a woman.
Just as I was loosing myself in that little Don Draper daydream, the woman tapped me on the shoulder, handed me the lady and walked away. I didn’t even get time to say “Thank You.”
Isn’t she beautiful? Many of you know that I love Ironstone – almost every “collectible” post I’ve written mentions White Ironstone. I can’t believe that I found this amazing piece. I would love to keep her, but as my mentor says “If you keep what you buy it’s not a business, it’s just shopping.”
Thanks so much for Reading Today!

Love you tons!!
That’s so sweet, love you too, sis!
wow but what a lovely find
Thank you! Thanks for reading and subscribing.
Thank you so much!
I love your ironstone piece.
Thanks so much, Ann! Happy Thanksgiving week.
Just gorgeous! GW is one of my main places to find quality ironstone and antique items. That was a sweet lady to give her to you. I love when people pay it forward with kindness!
Have a wonderful week,
Jennifer
Hi Jennifer. I find lots of cool stuff at GW as well, but this is my first Ironstone Pitcher. I think there may be more in different parts of the country. Thanks so much for stopping by – I really appreciate it.
She’s just stunning! And your mentor is one very wise person … love that sage advice!
Wishing you a fabulous Thanksgiving!
Linda
That is a lovely ironstone! I found a similar one in one of Toronto vintage shops. I bought it last year and at that time they have got still some more for reasonable price. I recommend checking the availability of online stores, or you can contact stores directly. Their staff is always ready to help by knowledgeable advice. I love going there just to have a chat with staff as it is experience per se to just talk about vintage and anything antique with people who know so much about it!
Thanks for the tip, Lucianna. I’m gonna go poke around the online stores of Toronto Vintage Shops now. Fun!!
Hi Jeannie,
I just stumbled across your site as you do by chance.
Love the Ironstone Jug. Good Thrifting, No scratch that, Great thrifting. I really connected with your final statement “If you keep what you buy it’s not a business, it’s just shopping.” I really was meant to read that….mmm better get cracking and start selling. And yes I do love that show pickers. So envious of the great places you guys thrift in the US. Would love to come up with a haul like pictures above. Much different here in Australia…. I can only dream of a haul like that one.
Cheers
Karen
Hi Karen,
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. I love to hear about what it’s like in other places. I hope your sales are great and you get to go ‘picking’ as much as you like.
Jeannie
I keep seeing ironstone on American blogs. I should probably start exporting it, but not sure what to look for. Does it have to say ‘ironstone’ on the base? x
The most valuable pieces are stamped on the bottom. Funny you should say that you should start exporting it, most of the ironstone that’s valuable today was exported from England to America in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It wasn’t actually very popular in England.
Love your blog! Thanks for stopping by.
Love it, It’s beautiful and a wonderful find!
Thank you so much, JoAnn!
Great find! I sell the pieces I find, but if I really want to keep them, I price them higher!
I’ll bet that works!! Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks so much for your visit. Love your ironstone pitcher!
This is so beautiful! I was out thrifting last night. I found a 43 piece set of Ironstone at Goodwill!! I was so excited.
Wow! Congratulations! I’d love to know what you got and what your going to do with it.
What a beautiful, beautiful find! You will be one of the features tomorrow at Make it Pretty Monday at The Dedicated House. Pop on in and pick up a feature button for your blog. Hope to see your prettiness again on Monday. Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse
Thank you so much! I’m so excited.
I love white ironstone! Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things Blog hop xo
Wow Jeannie, what a find. It is very beautiful. So, you’re really not keeping it? Congrats on being featured!
Linda at the French Hen’s Nest
Thank you Linda! I don’t think I can keep it, I have to sell it. But it will be very hard!
I have had that happen at thrift stores, I have been the giver, and I bet you have too. I love that spirit of cooperation that most thrifters share. Happy hunting.
Your right Paula, I have a ton of things I need to donate right now! Thanks so much for stopping by.
Great story! Makes this piece even more meaningful! I collect vintage white pitchers, but only one is marked ironstone! Wonderful find!!
Karen
Thanks Karen, I appreciate that!
